Think Way Outside the Bun

A California-based food joint swaps French fries for Brussels sprouts in hopes to evolve American cuisine.

Finally, the future of fast food looks a whole lot greener thanks to Lyfe Kitchen — a soon-to-be chain of inexpensive restaurants that were first heard about from our friends at Wired. They say no to butter, cream, white sugar and high fructose corn syrup and yes to grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and organic vegetables — think quinoa crunch wraps, edamame hummus and unfried chicken. Founded by former McDonalds head honchos with a menu curated by top chefs Art Smith and Tan Ronnen, the eatery forsees hundreds of openings around the country beyond their flagship in Palo Alto, Calif. Can’t wait for a pop-up in your area? Lyfe Kitchen groceries are fresh and readily available. For other ways to improve on healthy eating habits, read:

You Have Food on your Face

Your skin’s best nourishment may be hiding in your fridge.

Consuming fresh, unprocessed foods is a given in pursuit of good health. Yet the body’s biggest organ — our skin — forgoes this nutrition in exchange for creams, soaps, and oils born in chemical labs. That’s why skin specialist Dr. Saul Alkaitis, Ph.D, research scientist and founder of Dr. Alkaitis Holistic Organic Skin Food generated his line of organic food-based products 12 years ago. “When you read the labels on personal care products, you better read them as food labels because this is what’s going into your system,” he says. Or, as Alkaitis’ brand philosophy simply states: “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.”

So what exactly do you feed your oft-neglected external organ? “All life force is killed through pasteurization and processing. If you give a living organ healthy, whole foods it’s going to be happier. Period. Whatever you put on your skin goes into your body.” In keeping with that spirit, check out this slideshow of some whole foods that Dr. Alkaitis recommends for nourishing and revitalizing skin, along with his recipes to incorporate them into your routine.
